Target Plus guide

Target Plus requirements & product content standards.

Target Plus enforces some of the strictest product-content standards in marketplace retail. Understanding the taxonomy, required attributes, and variation rules — and keeping up as they change — is the difference between a live catalog and a queue of rejections.

The content bar: why listings get rejected

Every Target Plus item must be submitted against Target’s detailed item taxonomy with the required attributes for its category — dimensions, materials, compliance fields, imagery, and more, varying by category. Incomplete or malformed content is rejected at ingest: the listing simply doesn’t go live.

Common rejection causes we see: missing category-required attributes, invalid values (units, enumerations), broken parent/child variation structures, and image or copy fields that don’t meet spec.

Variations: parents, children, and themes

Products that come in sizes, colors, or multi-axis combinations must be submitted as structured parent/child variations using Target’s variation "themes." Get the structure wrong and either the whole family is rejected or shoppers see fragmented, unbuyable listings. Kits and bundles have their own listing rules — Acenda handles kits & bundles natively.

Requirements change — staying live is ongoing work

Target periodically changes which attributes are required per category. A feed that passed ingest in March can start failing in June with no change on your side. "Set it and forget it" breaks on Target Plus; staying live requires ongoing attribute management.

This is exactly the operational burden Acenda absorbs: our templates map your catalog to Target’s taxonomy, validate content before submission, and are updated as Target’s requirements change — so items pass ingest and stay published. See how the Acenda integration works.

Operational requirements beyond content

  • Fulfillment: timely, trackable shipping on every order — missed or late shipments hurt seller standing.
  • Returns: sellers must support returns as part of the Target customer experience.
  • Inventory accuracy: oversells and cancellations damage performance metrics; keep quantities continuously synced.

The operational detail lives in our guide to Target Plus fulfillment, inventory & returns.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Target Plus listings get rejected?

Most rejections come from missing category-required attributes, invalid values, broken parent/child variation structures, or content that doesn’t meet Target’s taxonomy spec. Rejected items never go live.

What are Target Plus required attributes?

Each category in Target’s taxonomy has its own set of required attributes — dimensions, materials, compliance fields, imagery, and more. The required set varies by category and changes over time.

How do variations work on Target Plus?

Size, color, and multi-axis products must be submitted as structured parent/child listings using Target’s variation themes. Incorrect structure causes rejections or fragmented listings.

Do Target Plus content requirements change?

Yes — Target periodically updates which attributes are required per category. Feeds that passed before can start failing, so staying live requires ongoing attribute management.

How does Acenda keep listings compliant?

Acenda maps your catalog to Target’s taxonomy, validates content before submission, handles variations and kits/bundles, and updates templates as Target’s requirements change.
