Is Macy's Marketplace worth it for your brand?

Quick answer

Macy's Marketplace can be worth it for sellers whose products fill gaps in Macy's own assortment and who can ship within 48 business hours from U.S. warehouses. Listings look like Macy's own, customers can earn and use Star Rewards points on marketplace purchases (with some exclusions), and sellers can opt into Macy's promotions and sponsored product ads. Macy's Marketplace fees align with industry-standard marketplace commission and referral structures, with exact terms set by Macy's.

When is Macy's Marketplace worth it?

It can be worth it when your products fill a gap in Macy's own assortment and you can run the operation Macy's describes. Marketplace listings appear identical to Macy's own, with a "Shipped and sold by [seller]" badge, and they sit in the relevant site taxonomy.

Customers can earn and use Star Rewards points on marketplace purchases, with some exclusions. Sellers can opt into select category-specific Macy's events and promotions, and Macy's offers sponsored product ads. Items in a promotion you opt into are also discoverable through that event.

When Macy's launched in September 2022, it named more than 20 categories, from baby and children's apparel and beauty to electronics, home, pets, and toys. Macy's provides training materials and live support, and shares Marketplace style guidelines during onboarding.

What does it take to run it well?

You need the account setup: a W-9 that matches IRS records, a U.S. tax ID, a U.S. bank account that accepts USD, a domestic warehouse, INFORM Consumers Act customer-service details, and a J.P. Morgan account before go-live.

Day to day, you ship within 48 business hours, process returns within two business days, and answer customer questions first. Common holds include missing attributes, nonstandard color or size values, duplicate combinations, thin images, and zero stock hiding an approved item.

The operating pages are orders and fulfillment and product listings.

What are the fees?

Macy's Marketplace fees align with industry-standard marketplace commission and referral structures, with exact commercial terms set by Macy's and confirmed during onboarding. Acenda's platform fee is separate (flat rate per channel, never a percentage of sales). Macy's does not publish a public rate card.

When might it not be worth it yet?

Be honest about the gaps before you apply.

  • Assortment. Macy's already sells your products through its own assortment.
  • Warehouse. You do not have a U.S. warehouse for shipping and returns.
  • Ship window. You cannot ship within 48 business hours or process returns within 2 business days.
  • Barcodes. You do not have GS1-certified UPCs.
  • Catalog. Your catalog is not ready for Macy's standard color and size values.

How Acenda helps

Acenda is an approved, pioneer partner of Macy's Marketplace and has been part of Macy's Marketplace since day one. With that comes the honor and responsibility of assisting with introductions and nominations for qualified brands. An introduction or nomination is not approval — Macy's makes the final decision.

Macy's publicly lists Acenda among the selected feed aggregators that Macy's Marketplace sellers can use to upload their items.

After approval, Acenda maps your catalog to Macy's attributes and standard color and size values, syncs stock and prices, and moves orders, tracking, cancellations, and returns. The index of that work is what Acenda handles for Macy's.
