How to optimize your marketplace listings for AI search

AI shopping assistants such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Amazon Rufus and Walmart Sparky answer from the product data they can read: titles, attributes, bullets, descriptions, images, reviews, Q&A, price and stock. The listings that are complete, consistent and current across every channel give them the most to work with. There's no special trick; it's the same clean product data that marketplace search already rewards.

What AI shopping assistants read

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google says no special markup or AI-specific file is needed; normal SEO best practices apply, structured data should match the visible text, and Merchant Center product data should be kept current.

ChatGPT shopping

OpenAI's product feed spec asks approved merchants for a regularly refreshed feed with required fields such as ID, title, description, link, brand, image, price and availability, with stable IDs and one row per variant.

Amazon Rufus

Amazon says Rufus answers using product listing details, customer reviews, community Q&A and information from across the web.

Walmart Sparky

Walmart hasn't published a Sparky-specific guide. Its published Listing Quality score covers content quality (title, description, key features, images), price competitiveness, shipping, published and in-stock status, and ratings and reviews.

Perplexity

Perplexity says its answer engine is more likely to recommend merchants who provide deeper product details such as availability, reviews, pricing and specifications.

12 tips to optimize your listings

  1. 1

Fill every required and recommended attribute.

Missing or invalid attributes are a top cause of rejected listings, and assistants filter and answer from attributes. See how to fix marketplace listing errors and How to find the allowed values for a marketplace field.

  2. 2

Use the most specific category or item type.

The category decides which attributes a marketplace asks for. See How to build a posting template and the video Build a category posting template.

  3. 3

Write titles that say what the product is.

Use brand + product type + key attribute + variant, within each channel's limit, with no promotional text. Each channel's limits are in Channel Specs.

  4. 4

Make bullets and descriptions answer real questions.

Say who it’s for, what it does, and when, where and how to use it, and answer the top questions from reviews and support. Put key specs in text, not only in images.

  5. 5

Give every item a valid barcode (GTIN) and keep IDs stable.

Stable identifiers help every channel match your product to the right listing. See How to change a UPC or barcode on a live listing.

  6. 6

Group variants under one parent with clean size and color values.

Watch How to use the group attribute for products and variants or read the help article.

  7. 7

Meet each channel's image rules and show the product from every useful angle.

Check sizes and backgrounds in Channel Specs and watch Add and arrange product images.

  8. 8

    Never guess regulated facts.

Material, country of origin, identifiers and compliance claims come from your records. For seller compliance, see the INFORM Consumers Act.

  9. 9

Keep price, stock, shipping and returns current on every channel.

Stale or out-of-stock listings get downgraded. The Acenda platform keeps pricing and inventory in sync.

  10. 10

Earn honest reviews and answer shopper questions.

Never pay for or incentivize reviews. Answered questions give shoppers and assistants more to work with.

  11. 11

Keep facts consistent across your site, feeds and every marketplace.

Use a per-channel override only where a channel rule needs one. See How to use attribute overrides to set a value for one channel.

  12. 12

Avoid blocked terms and check every AI-written fact before it publishes.

Watch Blocked listing terms and read Which terms can block your listing on a marketplace.

Tips by marketplace

How to check what AI assistants say about your products

  1. 1

Once a month, ask each assistant a buying question in your category without naming your brand.

  2. 2

Note which products, sellers and facts it names.

  3. 3

Trace any wrong fact to the listing or feed it came from, and fix it there.

There's no official dashboard for this yet, so checking by hand is the way to see what's being said.

How Acenda helps

ListingMagic™ (beta) starts from one master record. Acenda IQ reads each marketplace’s live schema and proposes the category, required attributes and picklist values, and your team approves changes in one worklist before anything publishes. After publish, it monitors errors and fixes them at the field level. Guardrails mean material, country of origin, identifiers and compliance claims are never inferred.

The Acenda platform manages listings across 100+ channels with bulk updates, per-channel status and errors, and keeps pricing and inventory in sync. Find every error in Item Issues and fix them in bulk with a Super Template (see how). Connect ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Grok to your Acenda data with the MCP server. Fees are a flat rate per channel.

AI listing optimization FAQ

What is AEO for marketplace listings?

Answer engine optimization means making product data complete and clear enough that AI assistants can find, understand and recommend it. For marketplace sellers it starts with the listing itself.

Do I need special markup or an llms.txt file for AI search?

Google says no special markup or AI-specific file is needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. On marketplaces, the listing fields themselves are the data.

How do I get my products recommended by Amazon Rufus?

Amazon says Rufus uses listing details, reviews and community Q&A. Complete attributes, clear bullets that answer questions, honest reviews and answered questions give it the most to work with. No one outside Amazon can promise a placement.

How do I optimize for Walmart Sparky?

Walmart hasn't published a Sparky guide. Start with its Listing Quality score: content, price, shipping, in-stock status, and ratings and reviews.

Does ChatGPT show marketplace listings?

ChatGPT shopping uses product data from merchant feeds and the web. Merchants approved for OpenAI's product feed send required fields such as title, description, price and availability, kept current.

Is optimizing for AI different from marketplace SEO?

Mostly no. The same complete, accurate and current listing data helps marketplace search and AI assistants.

How often should I review my listings?

Check listing errors weekly, review category rule changes when a marketplace updates them, and spot-check AI answers monthly.

Keep one product record valid on every channel.
